About Our Music Program
Captain Gilmer School offers many opportunities for students to participate in a variety of musical experiences for students Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth grade, performing primarily sacred and classical music at churches in the area. We want students to discover that music can be a ministry for God, and that their talents can be a blessing to others, as well as to their own lives by inspiring and uplifting their thoughts and elevating their soul (Education, p. 167). Hence, all students will participate in some musical course.

Captain Gilmer School offers strings for Pre-K through 1st grade, choir for grades K-2, handchimes for grades 3-4, choir and band for grades 5-8. Lower grades will learn rudimentary music theory, music history, listening skills, performance techniques, and will be exposed to orchestral instrumentation.

Grade 5-8 students may choose to join the CGS band or choir. Choir curriculum includes music theory, solfege, ear training, part singing, music history, orchestral instrumentation and performance techniques. Band curriculum includes rhythm theory, knowledge and history of instruments, techniques in playing and performance, ensemble cooperation and teamwork. (Rental fees for instruments will be the responsibility of the parents.)

Homeschoolers are welcome in any group for a small fee to help cover the cost of music and performance uniforms. Grades will be given for all these classes based on participation, tests, quizzes and public performances.

Private individual lessons for instruments, vocal, or piano are available at a reduced rate for CGS students. Cost and additional information are available from the school office.
